Teen

Suicide among our nation’s youth is a serious problem. The adolescent years can be emotionally turbulent, stressful and filled with pressure. Teenagers have to face being able to succeed and fit in, while trying to understand who they are. They may struggle with self-esteem issues, self-doubt, and feelings of alienation.

Impulsiveness and not thinking about long term consequences is one of the hallmarks of being a teenager. Factor this into a time in life where independence from adults is trying to be attained, and the desire to figure things out on their own is much stronger.  The problem is, in a brief moment of intense pain and anguish, for some, this leads to suicide.

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death overall for 15-24 year olds.  It is the 2nd leading cause of death for college age youth.

Depression and anxiety are also major risk factors for teen suicide.
